Birmingham Wrestling Club
Founded 50 years ago. Jim Ault currently coaches at the club. Jim might be 70 but he can still put the young wrestlers through their paces and show them how to do it when it comes to it. Most members of the club have tried other forms of martial art. Several we spoke to came from or were still practicing martial arts such as Boxing, Brazillian Jui Jitsu, Jui Jitsu, Kickboxing, ThaiBoxing, Mixed Martial Arts … |

Wrestling is for all ages. Jim started wrestling in his late twenty's. He became the Midlands Champion at fourty. He said that he was at his best at thirty nine. It is not too late for people in their thirties to start wrestling that includes women. Jim described fifty nine year old men as dynamite and the secret to their success is not to get injured. The sports club a few years ago where they train did a fitness test on all the clubs using the centre. To no surprise the wrestling club came out as the number one for fitness. I am not surprised, Jim really works them. |

Birmingham wrestling club recognises that wrestling is popular within certain communities. The club has not just had its focus on Mixed Martial Art competitions or competitions in general. They have used the club to set up a wrestling centre within communities where there is a high proportion of refugees who come from continents where wrestling is practiced. Through this they have brought communites together and given the refugees something they can identify with during their time here. |
