The Organisers

Walk in the right way.
When Jeffet and I first decided to organise the Walk in the right way martial arts event we used as a working title “doing the right thing”. We wanted instructors to want to use their martial arts skills to help Dave Lee. Martial arts have a long tradition of helping and protecting others. Traditionally in China and Japan , martial arts were to be used not just to defend oneself but the family, village, the weak and the poor.

Most of the martial arts featuring at the event are Japanese in origin. We felt therefore that we should use an authentic Japanese expression for “doing the right thing”. In Japan people use “Walk in the right way” to signify doing what is morally right. Corporations use it in their mission statements to signify social responsibility and good corporate governance.

Tae Kwon-do was developed by General Choi Hong Hi for the Korean army, to defend the state. The true martial artist is a servant to others as well as master of his art. In Japan and China today, it is rarely necessary to defend ones village against attackers but the do jo is considered family. The members of your do jo are brothers and sisters to you. Similarly, all martial artists are really like your cousins too. Almost all of the instructors we contacted wanted to help. We wanted the name to reflect the proper traditions.

Early publicity stated the event would be in Birmingham . When the quotation arrived we found some of the terms and conditions difficult to work within. The Birmingham venue cost was £2,100 (approx). We were able to save over £1,000 by moving the venue to Worcester and the facilities are better too. We are trying to raise money for the wheelchairs and not putting money into venues. We hope you applaud the move.
